The variegated shape of E. baileyi has yellowish spots and streaks at the exact points where there is a lack of chlorophyll; such streaks will never be the same in plants making each of them unique and for this reason highly appreciated by collectors. In its normal form it is a solitary cactus that with growth can ignite at the base. It has a cylindrical stem of intense green color with thin ribs and large fluffy areoles. Its thorns are brownish, long and tending downwards. The flowering period of E. baileyi f. variegata is spring and at the apex of the stem bloom large funnel-shaped flowers of rose color with jagged petals.
