C. hypogaea is a globe-shaped cacti, with a dark green or brownish globose stem, slightly depressed at the apex. It has several well marked tubercles, on which protrude white and woolly areoles equipped with radial and central spines: the first are short, of a black-brownish hue tending to become grey during the growth; the central ones, on the contrary, are almost absent or, If present, they are longer and more robust than radial ones. In the middle of summer its magnificent flowers bloom, with tonalities ranging from yellow to pink and are bell-shaped; the pleasant scent they emanate lasts only one day, from morning until sunset.
