The variegated shape of this cactus presents yellowish shades in the exact points of the epidermis where there is a lack of chlorophyll; such spots will never present identical in different plants, making each one unique and for this reason highly sought after by collectors around the world. In the normal form this cactus initially solitary, with time tufts. Its green stem has a globose shape with slightly tuberculate ribs, with age tends to light gray and lignifies at the base and along the margin of the ribs, assuming a black color that creates a beautiful and particular contrast. From its oval and slightly fluffy areoles grow long and rigid spines, initially brownish, which vary to dark gray. The flowering takes place in summer, but only on older specimens, generating bright yellow apical flowers.
