Cephalophyllum alstonii

Pretty miniature succulent, which does not exceed a few centimeters in height but rather tends to develop horizontally to give rise to a green and compact carpet of over a meter! For this reason it is a widely appreciated exemplar as upholstering and, sometimes, also as prevention from soil erosion, as it is so strong and compact to keep its substrate united. It consists of elongated and cylindrical leaves with a slightly triangular section, which branch off along the stems and tend to crawl to the ground. The soft and opaque green of the foliage contrasts pleasantly with the real highlight of C. alstonii: between winter and spring the clear and delicate expanses of Cephalophyllum are tinged with an intense ruby red thanks to its gigantic flowers, that bloom only when they are irradiated by the sun and close as soon as it sets, giving you a spectacular game of colors and liveliness!
