Description:

Small slow growing spherical cactus very popular among collectors. The peculiarity of this plant are its beautiful short spines arranged in a corolla, golden towards the center and tinged with white at the tips. The areoles between them form a thick white fluff which, together with the thorns, completely covers the cactus. It usually tends to cluster as it grows, forming a thick shiny cushion. In its variegated form, this cactacea has the typical lighter areas in the exact points where chlorophyll is absent: these characteristics will never be the same from one plant to another, therefore each specimen will be absolutely unique! During the winter, M. schiedeana f. variegata will embellish any environment thanks to the small flowers ranging from white to cream, which emerge from the dense feathery mantle.

Plant care:

It likes an exposure to full sun in rather airy locations.

It is preferable to keep it at mild temperatures and never below 5 °C, for this reason it is recommended to shelter it during the winter period.

Water moderately but only when the soil is completely dry. It is enough to water it once a week in spring and summer, reduce watering to once every two months in autumn, and to suspend it completely in winter.

The best soil is a well-draining one, even better if further enriched with inert materials such as pumice, sand or lapilli.

They do not need frequent fertilization, it is sufficient to dilute the fertilizer with watering once a year.
