The variegated shape of this cactaceae has the typical yellow areas, or lighter, due to the lack of chlorophyll. Such spots will never be identical in two or more plants, thus making each exemplar unique in its kind and for this reason strongly sought by collectors. In its normal form it is a cactus with a solitary posture that, growing up, often takes a dichotomous form, for this reason it is called "Cactus owl’s eye". In nature it grows in the tropical forest at an altitude between 150 and 2100 m. On its dark green stem there are numerous pyramidal-shaped tubercles, among which there is a thick white down. The brown spines are straight, rigid and robust, with the passage of time they take on a gray color. The flowers are born at the point where the previous year the plant developed. The flowering takes place in spring generating flowers with a funnel shape and a yellow color mottled brown inside the petals.
