The variegated form of this plant has yellow spots on its skin where chlorophyll is absent, which make each specimen unique, and therefore particularly appreciated by collectors. It is a globular cactacea, easily recognizable by its well-marked protuberances. It has multiple tubercles that show large, slightly fluffy, white areoles. Its sturdy, strong and rather long grayish-white spines tend to envelop the body. Near the top it generates funnel-shaped inflorescences that can vary from white to yellow.
