Its name literally means "with flowers similar to Stapelia": it is in fact a genus very similar to the other Stapeliinae. It differs from them mainly by its origin, considering that the Stapelinathus comes only from the island of Madagascar, unlike the other ones that come also from the African continent. This different origin has given it the peculiarities that neither Huernia, nor Stapelia don’t have: its stems are similar in shape but are more thorny and darker or, depending on the species, might be tuberculous or covered with whitish down. The affinity is mainly shown for the wonderful giant star-shaped flowers, of the most varied colors, adorned with very eye-catching shades or dots. We are therefore talking about a particular variant, which nevertheless has the same inestimable aesthetic value as the related genus!
