This succulent perennial is a plant that expands horizontally by covering every available surface. It has stems with 4-5 ribs with very evident and protruding tubercles ending with a tip. The epidermis is a light green streaked with a darker green hue. The real highlight of this plant are its flowers! They have the shape of a 5-pointed star; have a beautiful yellowish or intense orange hue that contrasts with very eye-catching reddish streaks! These flowers bloom at the apex of the stems and open in rapid sequence. Generally, the flowers of the orbeas emit an unpleasant smell to facilitate pollination by insects; in the case of O. schweinfurthii this smell is not present but its flowers smell of ripe fruit and attract the small fruit flies called Drosophila that mistake them for a source of food and in this way favor pollination.
