In nature it grows in dry forests of Madagascar. It is a small, caudiciform, low-growing bonsai-type succulent. In its caudex it stores water to survive during drought periods. It has gray stems, which arise from the caudex and resemble snakes, due to their tangled appearance. The leaves are fleshy, narrow and pointed, tend to bend like a hook towards the end. With the prolonged exposure to the direct sun, the leaves change the color from green to reddish-purplish. During the flowering period, small flowers bloom that take on gray-purple to pink-yellow colors.
