Its name comes from the Arabic and literally means "flesh wound", probably referring to the unpleasant smell that emanate the flowers of this genus, just like the similar Stapelia. It has a columnar stem with protruding tubercles ending with small tips. The epidermis is light green and has purple streaks. After prolonged exposure to the sun it can take on reddish shades. The highlight of this succulent are its flowers: they have the shape of a star of intense yellow color and a shiny surface.
