Pleasant succulent characterized by slender cylindrical stems that do not exceed heights of about one meter, tending to prostrate towards the ground and assume creeping character. The stems have a quadrangular section, with ribs well spaced and adorned with soft teeth but well protruding. The epidermis assumes grey-bluish shades that tend to purple when the specimen is abundantly exposed to sunlight. The true strength of Caralluma joannis is however the inflorescence: in late summer its stems, near the apex, are enriched by a corolla of small groups of peculiar stelliform flowers, whose velvety cream-coloured surface is delicately streaked with dark colors until it fades towards burgundy on the tips, for a truly breathtaking final effect!
