This species of Euphorbia is named after the Mlanje (or Mulanje) mountain range found in Malawi in Africa. The climate in these areas is arid and temperatures are high with long periods of drought. The plant has adapted to its natural habitat by developing a caudex where it stores water that it can use during these dry periods. Long stems (which have three/four vertical ribs) emerge from its woody caudex Its spines are positioned at the edge of the ribs, arranged in pairs along the entire length of the rib. The epidermis is shiny green, while the spines are brown/reddish. This plant is generally an indoor plant and cannot stand the low temperatures and cold of winter. We can place it inside our homes, in bright and airy environments; during the summer period it can also be positioned on the balcony (avoiding the hottest hours of the day) because the plant suffers anyway. E. mlanjeana cannot be missing from your collection.
