This wonderful exemplar is very appreciated by collectors all over the world for its particular crested shape: its fan-shaped crest is different in each plant and will make each specimen unique. In the normal form E. gymnocalycioides is generally a succulent with a globose shape, depressed at the apex and perfectly geometric. The body, of intense brownish green colour, has spiral ribs and protruding tubercles, similar to those of the Gymnocalycium from which it derives its name, with scars formed by fallen leaves. The flowering takes place in summer at the apex of the plant, generating small yellow flowers.
