Piaranthus (Crested)

Piaranthus

Its name derives from the Greek and literally means "fat flower", making reference to the succulent flowers, that distinguish it. They are small plants with compact stems, one of the odd features of these plants is that they form rosettes-like structures, but without leaves! They are indeed equipped with tubercles to replace the leaves. This plant is highly appreciated for its easy cultivation and even more for the ease of flowering, which is the real strong point: they have very showy inflorescences (unfortunately with an unpleasant smell to promote pollination), which are star-shaped, often spotted or nuanced, which will certainly not go unnoticed among your house decoration! Here are some easy tips for its proper care and cultivation: This plant requires a lot of light throughout the year, however avoid direct sunlight. They grow well even in dim light. It is preferable to keep it at mild temperatures that should never go below 5 °C, for this reason it is recommended to shelter it during the winter period. Water regularly but moderately in spring-summer, always making sure that the soil is always dry between one watering and another one. During the winter period, reduce watering to once every two months, avoiding stagnation of water. A well-draining soil is an optimal solution, even better if further enriched with inert materials such as pumice or lapilli. They do not need frequent fertilization, it is sufficient to dilute a specific fertilizer with watering once a year.
