The crested form of this plant has the typical fan arrangement, extremely compact and rich in asymmetrical and sinuous ribs, which make the specimen truly one of a kind, similar to a marble sculpture! In its normal form, Myrtillocactus cochal has bluish-green columnar stems, with symmetrical and deeply furrowed longitudinal ribs. From small and rounded areoles, grayish and very straight spines emerge: the radial ones are shorter and thinner, the only central spine is longer, stronger and directed outwards. These characteristic quills tend to disappear in the crested form, to leave room for rare and microscopic darker thorns that allow to fully show all the sculptural beauty of the stem.
