The crested shape of this cactus has a fan-shaped crest which makes the plant unique in that each exemplar has its own crested shape that will never be identical to another. In the normal form M. montensis has a globose stem of opaque green color, equipped with rhomboidal tubercles well protruding and between which develops a white fluff. From the tip of the tubercle come out extremely thin radial spines, pale yellow and well straight, which are radially arranged; the central spines are not always present, sometimes they are two more robust and dark spines, directed one upwards and one outwards, while other times, especially at the apex, there may be a single brownish spine, extremely long, thin and perfectly straight.
