In its crested form, Gymnocalycium horstii is characterized by a crested growth instead of the typical globose shape of the species. In this form, the ribs merge together into a sort of wavy or pleated ridge along the top of the plant. The spines, if present, can be arranged irregularly along the crest. This cactus, in its normal form, is globose with pronounced ribs and white or greyish thorns, arranged along the areoles along the ribs. It is also known for the characteristic wooly areoles that produce light pink or cream white flowers, which bloom from the top of the plant during the flowering season.
