Commiphora brevicalyx (Caudex)

The name of the species comes from the Greek and literally means "cushion" and "rubber". These succulents in nature become real imposing trees; they have a woody stem with clear bark, often of paper appearance and tending to fall apart leavin space for the living green below. The water used in drought periods is stored in the stem; the commiphore are a family of caudex. From its long branches, leaves of intense green color emerge and at the base of these grow small fruits of red color. The climate of Madagascar is very mild and the fat plant has adapted to its environment. To grow Commiphora brevicalyx in the house we must follow the general lines taking into account its natural habitat; it should be watered moderately, only when the soil is completely dry. It is sufficient once a week in spring and summer, a reduction every two months in autumn and to suspend completely in winter. This fat plant is very sought after by collectors all over the world.
