The variegated shape of this cactus has yellowish shades or spots in the exact points of the epidermis where there is a lack of chlorophyll; such stains will never be identical in different plants making each of them unique in its kind and for this reason much sought after by collectors. In its normal form it is a small spherical cactus. It has a body with a typical purple color (hue that increases with exposure to the sun), with well-defined rhomboidal ribs, white and narrow areoles and small black spines, combed and well attached to the body of the plant. Its inflorescences at the apex of the plant are funnel-shaped, generally on the shades of pink and white, formed by thin petals and arranged in several layers, which give an effect of shine similar to silk.
