Its name honors the German naturalist Edward Popping. It is a shrubby cactus, very branched, with a hanging habit. Its cylindrical, club-shaped stems are barbed and have robust and dense dark green leaves. It blooms in late spring and produces large and beautiful lemon yellow satin flowers.
