Description:
It is a small cactacea that is distinguished from the other ‘Mammillaria compressa’ for its long central spines and its thick down. Its green stem can have both a solitary and branched bearing. It is composed by numerous conical, turgid and close together tubercles. The spines are very long and stiff, and due to their prominent curvature they were traditionally used as fishing hooks. Flowering occurs in spring, generating bell-shaped flower rings of bright colors ranging from pink to purple on each head.

Description:

Mammillaria compressa is a spherical cactus, that develops a quite "massive" cylindrical shape, as club-shaped tubercles proliferate. Its tubercles, between which there is a thick down, are very pronounced, close together and firm (hence the name ‘compressa’). Its spines, which vary in color from chalk white to brown, are very small and short. In winter and spring, it blooms with small bell-shaped flowers, which vary in color from purplish pink to deep red, embedded in its down.

Plant care:

It likes an exposure to full sun in rather airy locations.

It is preferable to keep it at mild temperatures and never below 5 °C, for this reason it is recommended to shelter it during the winter period.

Water moderately but only when the soil is completely dry. It is enough to water it once a week in spring and summer, reduce watering to once every two months in autumn, and to suspend it completely in winter.

The best soil is a well-draining one, even better if further enriched with inert materials such as pumice, sand or lapilli.

They do not need frequent fertilization, it is sufficient to dilute the fertilizer with watering once a year.
