Description:

Adenia spinosa is a shrub with a climbing habit strongly characterized by its magnificent caudiciform stem. In Tshivenda language it is commonly called "tshivhuyu-dumbu", or "small baobab with a big belly", precisely to indicate its bulging shape similar to an elephant foot. The trunk is in fact lumpy, irregular, and can reach up to 1.5 meters in diameter. From this trunk, long, thin and thorny branches spread, which in summer lose their leaves (green, oval-shaped and strongly venous) to avoid consuming too much water. During the flowering period, it blooms with yellow flowers.

Plant care:

It requires a lot of light during all seasons, however avoid direct sunlight especially during the hottest hours of the day.

Its natural habitat is in tropical climates, thus it does not withstand temperatures below 10 °C and it does not like too dry heat. It is therefore advisable to keep it away from cold and intense sun.

Water moderately but only when the soil is completely dry. It is enough to water the plant once every two weeks in spring and summer, and reduce the frequancy to once every two months in autumn and suspend it completely in winter.

The best option is a well-draining soil, even better if further enriched with inert materials such as pumice, sand or lapilli.

They do not need frequent fertilization, it is sufficient to dilute the fertilizer with watering once a year.
