Description:

It is a solitary cactus, which tends to become columnar with growth, of a color, that varies strongly between green, greyish and purple, depending on the variety, but also on the different sun exposure. It has very pronounced and rather acute ribs, with small transverse grooves, and its charm is accentuated by long and dark spines, which tend to take on grayish colors with age. It is a very popular species especially for its abundant brightly colored inflorescences, which pleasantly contrast with the dark shades of the stem and quills.

Plant care:

It likes very bright places, however, avoid direct sunlight during the hottest hours of the day.

It prefers rather mild temperatures, however it still survives even at temperatures close to freezing if the soil is dry.

Water moderately but only when the soil is completely dry. It is enough to water the plant once a week in spring and summer, and suspend watering completely in winter.

The best soil is a well-draining one, even better if further enriched with inert materials such as pumice, sand or lapilli.

They do not need frequent fertilization, it is sufficient to dilute the fertilizer with watering once a year.
