Baseonema

Baseonema

The origins of the name Baseonema are quite uncertain, but it is believed that it may derive from the Latin words "base" meaning "base" and "onem" meaning "cement", which could refer to its grayish caudex similar to cement. The baseonemas are a genus of succulent plants, native to the East African savannah, where they use the caudiciform base to store water and nutrients to survive the arid climate during drought periods. This genus is very limited, in fact it includes only five species of which only one (Baseonema gregorii) is officially recognized. Due to their tropical origins, the plants belonging to this genus need rather high temperatures, so they must be placed indoor only.
